To share or not to share?

Lately I have been recording more of my students' works.  Some classes have better outcomes than others.  I'm having a debate with myself about whether or not to share a recording of one class with another.

Any thoughts about this?

  1. Annie,

Thanks for the dialog about this. You suggested something that didn't occur to me, which is to present the various examples without telling them which class is which. I feel more comfortable about this approach since it's likely to remove the bias they might have for their own work, or worse, against another group's. It may make it possible for them to evaluate the recordings based on the performance rather than the performers. Thanks.

  2. Hi Rob and Annie,

I ALWAYS play recordings of everyone for my classes. Part of it is because I teach middle school, and they are SO motivated by competition. When they hear another class, they want to be as good as them.

In addition, our students aren't as critical as we are... they don't hear the same mistakes as we do. I play chorus recordings, YouTube recordings, and General Music for my kids all the time. It has always worked out in my advantage, even if the students were scared by the "perfection" of what they heard in the beginning!
